A fully grown country club on the horizon: Peter Thomas built the 2 squash courts in 1970 and once the courts were complete Umhlali was at last a fully-fledged country club, offering golf, bowls, squash, tennis and a members’ clubhouse.

Growth: Peter Matkovich accepted the invitation and almost 2 decades after the birth of Umhlali Country Club, the committee embarked on the project to upgrade the course to a full 18 holes.

“The ladies brought trees, the farmers brought labour and equipment and someone in the know set up irrigation. Everyone in the community brought something. I have never experienced such community involvement in constructing a golf course as happened here.” – Peter Matkovich
